What is Your Background In Teaching?
I've taught in secondary schools previously- no leadership roles.
What Do You Enjoy About Your New Role?
I love that I work from 9-5 and I'm actively told NOT ti work additional hours, and that I MUST switch off! My workload is built up slowly so that I don't feel overwhelmed and I feel really supported and encouraged to research and ask for shadowing opportunities.
What's Is Your Office Set-Up?
I work remotely which is an absolute game-changer! I can choose to go into the office or work from anywhere that suits me. The other day I worked at my local park cafe! It was wonderful. Now I love managing my own dairy, and I don't feel micro-managed like I did in my previous teaching role.
How Did you Land Your Job?
I recommend signposting your work with supporting children and families, any safeguarding work you have completed and highlighting the ways you followed school procedures. use Linkedin to your advantage and reach out to current family support workers to see how they landed their role- they might know of job roles in your area!
How does pay compare to teaching?
I did have to take quite a big pay-cut, but I'm much happier on my new role and I feel so much more relaxed. I ensure that every month I have a budget plan, and if I want to go on holiday or save for something big, I just plan around it and spend less on other things. I've not noticed the pay as much as I thought I would!
How did you find support worker roles?
I found lots of roles on local council websites. I applied for 5 in total- I was rejected from 3 and interviewed with 2. The process can be disheartening, but you have to just keep a positive mindset, and keep plugging away!
